Primary Storage

RAM (Random Access Memory)

It is the memory in a computer that is used to store computer programs while they are running and also any data the programs need to undertake their task.
RAM is emptied every time the computer is turned off.
It is also known as 'volatile memory'.

ROM (Read Only Memory)

A memory chip where essential system instructions (BIOS) are permanently stored.
The data held on ROM can be read but not changed. This is done during manufacturing.
ROM is non volatile, meaning that the data stored on it will not be lost when the computer is switched off.

Secondary Storage

Mechanical Drive

A storage device that uses moving parts, such as a magnetic tape, magnetic disk or optical disc.
The term is commonly used to contrast hard disks with non-mechanical solid state drives(SSDs).

Solid State Drive

This is memory based on silicon technology rather than magnetic or optical technology.
It has no moving parts and is very fast compared to other memory methods.
Silicon memory 'chips' are often mounted together to form a memory card.
Solid state memory includes RAM, ROM, EPROM, EEPROM and Flash.

Online (Cloud Storage)

This word has recently been used for many different services such as 'cloud backup', 'cloud computing', 'cloud email'.
All it means is that a data-intensive service is being provided by another company on your behalf via the internet.
This service may be for your own use or it may be for your customers.
They normally have one or more dedicated data centres to provide the service advertised.
